The course of primary Listeria monocytogenes infection during gestation in C57Bl/6 mice
To gain more insight into the organ distribution of L. monocytogenes during pregnancy, we followed the pathohistological and immunohistochemical chanes in livers and placentas of C57Bl/6 mice during the course of primary listeriosis. Mice were infected intravenoulsly wih 2x10000 CFU of L. monocytogenes, at different periods of pregnancy (2 days before fertilization, on the 3rd, 12th and 15th day of pregnancy) and sacrificed on the 18th day of pregnancy. The most pronounced effects in the examined organs were seen in the group infected on the 15th day of pregnancy. This is obviously because the examination was preformed three days post inoculation, when the peak of infection occurred. However, in the livers of pregnant mice sacrificed 6, even in those sacrificed 15 days post infection, microscopically visile changes could still be found. This seems to confirm that pregnancy results in an increased susceptibility to L. monocytogenes infection.
