Mechanical Design of the SLS Storage Ring

Storage rings of 3rd generation synchrotron radiation facilities require increasing positioning and alignment precisions that must be preserved over long time spans. In fact, magnet positioning tolerances are being reduced to a minimum by the quest for lower emittance and increased lifetime. In this work are described the SLS storage ring mechanical support, alignment and disturbances compensation systems that allow to meet these requirements. In particular is adressed their design, the tests done on the respective prototypes and the quality assurance and installation procedures. The applicability of the developed arrangement to beam-based alignments is finally illustrated.
