Electromagnetically Coupled Rectangular Patch Antenna
A procedure for adding a parasitic patch element over a driven rectangular patch in order to achieve a greater bandwidth in microstrip antennas is considered. Extensive measurements were taken which enabled the influence of distance between a parasitic and driven patch on the input impedance locus to be determined. Both coaxial and microstrip feeds were considered. The optimum distance between parasitic and driven patch was found. A simple matching network was derived and its parameters computed for the antenna with an optimized distance between the driven and parasitic patch. The matching network consists of a line transformer of optimal length and characteristic impedance and was optimized using CAD tools. Experimental results of the influence of the matching network on input impedance locus were in good agreement with theoretical predictions. the achieved relative bandwidth gave about 30% of the voltage standing wave ratio no greater than 2.
