Nuclear morphometry in prostatic smears
Introduction: Prostatic diseases are a significant medical problem due to high frequency in men of middle and advanced age. Early detection and proper treatment of prostatic cancer is of special importance. Methods: Imprint smears of transurethral or radical prostatic resections were morphometrically analysed in 40 patients by an automated image analyzer. We elaborated nuclear size, shape and irregularity by nuclear simple parameters and shape factors. Obtained data were compared with cytologic and histologic diagnoses. Results: The nuclear features differ significantly between benign prostatic hyperplasia and adenocarcinoma, but the results in cases of cytologic atypia of prostatic epithelium were not conclusive. Discussion: Nuclear morphometry can provide additional data in identifying prostatic adenocarcinomas, specially well differentiated.
