Stacked Rectangular Patch Antenna with Line Transformer Matching Network

A procedure of adding a parasitic patch element over a driven rectangular patch in order to achieve an increased bandwidth of microstrip antennas has been considered. Comprehensive measurements were carried out and enabled one to determine the influence of a separation distance between the parasitic and the driven patch on the input impedance locus. The matching network consisting of a single line transformer was derived and its parameters computed for the antenna with optimized separation distance between the driven and parasitic patches. The achieved relative bandwidth is about 30% with VSWR lower or equal to 2.
