Prerequisite action of aha based cosmetics on epidermis
The pH value of the skin is one of the most important indicators of alpha hidroxy acids (AHAs) cosmetics efficacy. The mechanism of their activity has a direct influence on the pH value of the skin, which changes at the epidermal cell level. Included in the study were 60 subjects (two groups of 30 women, aged 25-58), who used creams with differ¬ ; ; ent pH-values. Both groups were using a placebo sample (pH 6.6) on the right forearm, and on the left forearm different active creams: cream C with pH 2.7 and cream D with pH 3.7, the concentration of active AHA-complex in both creams was 5.0%. The skin pH¬ ; ; values in vivo prior to, 30 minutes after, and 1, 2, 3, and 6 weeks after the application showed a reduction of pH-value in the surface layer of stratum corneum in comparison with the placebo sample. A more considerable reduction was recorded in the group using the more acid cream C (pH 2.7). The regular use of AHA-based creams for 6 weeks was found to cause a mean reduc¬ ; ; tion of skin pH by nearly 0.5 pH-value unit cream D, and nearly 1.0 pH-value unit for cream C. AHA-based cosmetics reduce pH of epidermis, which is good anti aging property.
