The Guney Tufa Waterfall as Geological Heritage, Denizli: Geological Properties, and Suggestions on Sustainable Use and Protection

Tufa is the product of calcium carbonate precipitation under a cool water (near ambient temperature) regime and typically contains the remains of micro- and macrophytes, invertebrates and bacteria. This type of carbonate precipitation is related to karstic system. Some of tufa formations are also natural and recreational sits and tourist attraction in the place. For this reason, many tufa sites are under protection, and some are included in world heritage list by UNESCO. Geologic, physicochemical and isotopic features of the Guney waterfall site and similar fields in the Denizli basin have been investigated in context of a project supported by Pamukkale University, Ruđer Bošković Institute and Denizli governorship for a few years. The Guney waterfall tufa field at northwest of Denizli is a first-grade natural site located to the southeast slope of Buyuk Menderes River valley, 72 km far from city centre. Water in the site is supersaturated with respect to CaCO3. Temperature and pH values in spring water are 18.7°C and 7.54, respectively. pH values increase downflow and CO2 values decrease in same direction. The 14C activities of recent tufa samples are 60-70 pMC. The δ 13C and δ 18O values of active and passive tufa samples varies between -9.13 and -6.0‰ and between -8.44 and -7.40‰ , respectively. These isotopic values are typical for fresh water tufa deposit. The 14C dating of passive tufa give 2010&plusmn ; ; 220 - 5790&plusmn ; ; 5790 yr BP. The Guney waterfall and surroundings, together with scientific, natural and touristic aspects, is candidate to be a unique geologic/natural heritage. For this reason the roads to the waterfall should be improved. In the light of scientific data, the project should be prepared in relation to protection of waterfall area and sustainable usage and application works should be made by the context of this project. At the waterfall area agricultural activities should be stopped or reorganised.
