E.E. Cummings: Poetsko zrcaljenje jezika

This paper examines some general features of E. E. Cumming's poetry bearing in mind his holistic definition of poetry and his creation of highly individualized poetic idiolect. E. E. Cummings' radical use of poetic language is demonstrated in the analysis of a poem in relation to its content as well as to its form. Distortion of syntax as an intrinsic feature of his poetry reflects also on the semantic level, so that the consistency of his apparently fragmented poems relies on the internal motivation of all its constituents. Therefore, different structural levels of the poem are interrelated and reflect into each other forming a compact polysemic whole. Although E. E. Cummings is best understood when he is met on his own terms by using the whole body of his poetry and his symbols as a frame of reference, a consistent interpretation of his poems can be achieved by applying Roman Jakobson's syntactic theory of poetry and his description of poetic function which projects the principle of equivalence from the axis of selection into the axis o combination.
