Response of maize and barley to ameliorative fertilization

Two identical field experiments were set up on two soils (Luzani and Kobas localities) at the beginning of April 2001. Increased rates of P and K fertilizers were applied in the experiments: a) control (standard fertilization) ; b) a + 1500 kg P2O5 ha-1 ; c) a + 1500 kg K_2O ha-1 ; d) = b + c. Phosphorus was applied as monoammonium phosphate (MAP: 12% N + 52% P_2O_5) and potassium as KCl. Urea (46% N) was used to equalize N levels added by MAP. Residual effects of the fertilization were tested in the following growing season (2002) and standard fertilizer rates were applied (kg ha-1: 177 N + 100 P_2O_5 + 150 K_2O). The field trials were performed in four replicates. The size of the experimental fertilization plot was 64.3 m^2. The field experiment with three rates of P fertilization was conducted in spring 2003 on Okucani hydromorphic soil. P was added as monoammonium phosphate (MAP: 52% P_2O_5 and 12% N). N was equalized for all treatments by addition of correspondingly rates of CAN (calcium ammonium nitrate: 27% N). Maize was grown for the 2003 growing season. In the next year we tested residual influences of P on winter barley (cultivar Lord) properties. The total amounts individual elements in maize (the ear-leaf at sliking stage) and barley (grain) were determined after their microwave digestion by concentrated HNO_3+H_2O_2. Plant analyses were made by Jobin-Yvon Ultrace 238 ICP-OES spectrometer. Maize growing on the Luzani soil resulted in 15% lower yield compared to the Kobas soil. Fertilization with P and P in combination with K resulted in yield increases of 5% and 9%, respectively. However, the leaf P was dependent only on the fertilization and it is increased by 25% and 14%, for P and PK treatment, respectively. Growing season had significant influences on the leaf Mn (60% lower in 2002 compared to 2001) and the leaf Zn (14% lower in 2001 compared to 2002). Maize grown in the Luzani trial had by 9% lower the leaf Zn and by 37% higher the leaf Mn compared to the Kobas trial. Under the influence of P fertilization, the leaf Zn decreased by 37% compared to the control. Application of both P and K resulted in decreases of leaf Zn by 30%. However, P fertilization, alone or in combination with K, increased the leaf Mn for 111% and 72% respectively. Although applied fertilization mainly considerable and significantly influenced on these nutrients status, they were all cases in normal levels. Ameliorative P fertilization significantly increased grain yields of barley up to 25% in comparison with the control, while protein and starch contents were independent on the fertilization. In general, grain composition differences among applied treatments were mainly non-significant because significant differences only for P and Mn (increasing trend due to P application) as well as for Zn and Mo (decreasing trend) were found.
