Severe Adriatic jugo wind
Jugo is a southerly or southesterly warm and humid wind in the Adriatic sea customary considered as scirroco wind which originates in the Sahara. In this paper we claim that jugo is not generally scirocco, although jugo of gale force may have synoptic characteristics of scirocco. Case studies show that severe jugo events are associated with a deep lee cyclone south of the Alps that may draw dry and dusty air from North Africa to the Meditterranean. Employing the scale separation technique it is shown that the mesoscale orographic perturbation in the area of Dinaric Alps exibits an antisymmetric dipolar structure in pressure and wind field, with the development of subsynoptic cyclonic vortex prividing conditions favourable for strengthening of jugo and its maxima gusts.
