On the structural and magnetic properties of the CePt5-xAlx system
The structural and magnetic properties of the CePt5-xAlx system have been studied. It was found that platinum in CePt5 can be replaced by aluminium up to the composition CePt2Al3. The hexagonal unit cell of the prototype compound is preserved, but at the composition CePt2Al3, as a result of ordering of aluminium atoms, a much larger unit cell was observed. The magnetic susceptibility for all samples follows a Curie-Weiss behaviour with effective magnetic moments close to that of the Ce3+ ion. The valency for the cerium ion is briefly discussed in terms of possible electron transfer and difference in electronegativity.
