Tehnical and Cottonised Flax Fibers - Comparison of properties

Flax cottonisation is based on the ability of technical fibres to be split to the level of elementary fibres. The quality of technical fibres increases with their ability to be cottonised, because the spin ability is thus increased. The aim of this paper is to investigate changes textile technological properties flax fibres after the cottonisation treatment. Because investigations of ultrasound on properties of flax fibres so far have been shown to be successful, cottonisation was performed in a cottonisation bath with and without employing ultrasound. Tests were performed on technical flax fibre samples obtained from plants grown from five seed sorts - Jitka, Viola, Texa, Merkur and Bonet. The plants were grown at the testing grounds of the Faculty of Agronomy, University of Zagreb, and were processed into technical fibres under laboratory conditions. The efficiency of the flax fibre cottonisation was determined using the following parameters of technical and cottonised flax fibres as seen in fig. 1: length, cross section area, fineness and strength. The results obtained indicate not only the possibility of environmentally more friendly cottonisation process (no chemical agents and micro-organisms), but also a positive effect of the application of ultrasound in cottonising, for the purpose of obtaining finer technical fibres.
