The effects of hyperbaric oxigenation on somato sensory evoked potentials after experimental spinal cord injury

The effect of hzpebaric oxygenation on the recovery of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) was examined in the experimenatl model of spinal cord imapct injury in rabbits. SEPs can provide a unique inside into the functining of the nervous system since they result from teh direct stimulation of sensory nerves. The spinal cord evoked potentials were recoreded by using monopolar needle electrodes placed epiduraly over L1 and C7 segments after stimulation of the right peroneal nerve.. Reference lectrodes were placed in the corresponding paravertebral muscles and in the mid frontal area at Fz. The spinal cord impact injury (150gcm) was perforemd under the petobarbital anaesthesia (30 mg/kg i.v.) SEPs were recorded just before injury and 8 days after the spinal cord injury: The spinal cord evoked potentials consisted of a small positive peak. Latencies of the maximal negative peak were measured. Hyperbaric oxygenation a potent inhibitor of tissue hypoxia was tested with the purpose to reduce spinal cord hypoxia caused by the injury.. The animals have been exoposed to hyperbaric oxigenation immediately after the injury, and during the eight subsequent days, at 2.2 ATE pressure of 99.5% oxygen lasting 45 minutes. Spinal cord injury provoked latency increase in SEPs that indicate the problem in spinal conduction. Hyperbaric oxigenation attenuiates alteration in SEPs showing the significant effcts.
