Hyperbaric oxygenation improves motor deficit in spinal cord injured rabbits

Spinal cord injury often results in nerve tissue damage followed by motor and sensory deficit. Hypoxia caused by spinal cord injury to nerve tissue damage and deterioration of neural function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of hyperbaric oxygenation, a potent repressor of tissue hypoxia on motor activity of spinal cord injured rabbits. The study was carried ouit on adult rabbits 2.5-3.5 kg body weight. Medial dorsal lumar laminectomy was performed under pentobarbital anesthesia )30mg/kg i.v.) followed by the contusion of spinal cord rpovoked by a strike of 150 g cm, that resulted in spontaneously irreversible paraplegia in the experimental animals. The animals have been exposed to hyperbaric oxygenation immediately after the injury and during the eight subsequent days,at 2.2 ATE pressure of 99.5 - 0.5 % oxygen, lasting 45 minutes. Hind limb motor activity was controled daily, according to Tarlov 's system during the whole course of the experiment. The results of the experiment show that the hyperbaric oxigen diminished the motor deficit in the injured animals. A significant improvement of the motor deficit has been observed during the whole course of the experiment.
