The applicability of wood and plastic composites in construction
This paper deals with the characteristics of wood-plastic composites depending on the utilised synthetic polymer. When speaking about waste plastic materials and wood shavings that are left over from wood processing, as well as woodland debris or the pieces of unusable wood products, the characteristics of wood-plastic composites primarily depend on the synthetic polymer quality. Wood particles are used here mainly as fillers and do not have an impact on the composite characteristics. Compared to natural wood, thermo-plastic composites are highly water-resistant, they resist degradation and insects, do not chuff, but get lower marks in terms of bending firmness and have a low level of sunlight tolerance and heat resistance. However, it is possible to improve these characteristics by adding chemical components, but this increases the price of the products and endangers its ecological acceptability.
