The Influence of Alloying Elements on Corrosion Behaviour of Ti-Al Alloys in Neutral Solutions Containing Chloride Ions

The surface oxide film on titanium and Ti-alloys and its stability in biological environments play a decisive role in the biocompability of titanium orthophaedics implants. The formation of anodic titanium(IV)oxide films and the passivity of Ti, Ti 6Al 4V and Ti 6Al 6Nb alloys have been studied in Hank s solution under potentiodynamic conditions (t = 37 °C). The interpretation of results was based on the solid-state concept for a semiconductor or a dielectric film. The oxide film formed on titanium and Ti-alloys at the open circuit potential (OCP) and its natural growth have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) over a long-term stability period. It was concluded that niobium is a promising metal as a replacement for vanadium with respect to corrosion resistance in the presence of chloride ions.
