Identification of materials hidden inside a container by using the 14 MeV tagged neutron beam
In the two component systems proposed for the inspection of shipping containers the first part of the system is an x-raying imagining device for a fast scanning and the second part is proposed to be a neutron based device for a ''confirmatory'' inspection. In neutron based devices, the 14 MeV neutrons are used to find the chemical composition within the selected volume element inside the container. In this report, the measurements of time of flight and gamma-ray spectra from the various materials inside the container are presented. Different materials could be distinguished by making the Dalitz plot from the following three parameters: the number of counts in carbon peaks, the number of counts in oxygen peaks and the number of counts in transmitted neutron time-of-flight peak (measuring the density of the investigated object). Experiments were performed with real explosives (SEMTEX 1A) and simulants. Paper was found to be a good simulant of some explosives. In the measurements reported here 64.4 kg of paper was found behind the 5 cm of the iron representing the range of an industrial 300 keV x-ray imaging system.
