Serotyping of enterotoxigenic isolates of Escherichia coli from suckling and weaned piglets with colibacillosis
This study was aimed to investigate hemolytic activity, identify serogroups and the presence of fimbrial antigens in 929 strains of E. coli isolated from the suckling (338) and weaned (591) pigs with clinical manifestation of colibacillosis. Hemolytic activity has been confirmed in 823 (89%) isolated strains. Its incidence in the strains isolated from the weaned pigs was twice as high (69%) than in the sucklig ones (32%). Serologic groups have been determined for 18% strains isolated from the suckling pigs ; serovars O149:K91 and O8.K87 were dominant (48% and 30% of the strains respectively). In the weaned pigs prevailing serovars were O8:K87, O149:K91 and O157:K"V17" (27%, 26% and 19% of the strains respectively). Fimbrial adhesin K88ac has been found in 61% of serotyped strains, most frequently with the serovars O149:K91 (29%) and O8:K87 (23%). Their incidence in the typed strains of the suckling and weaned pigs was 23% and 42% respectively. Concomitant presence of K88ac fimbrial adhesin and hemolytic activity have been identified in 65% of serotyped E. coli strains. P987 fimbrial adhesin was detected in 27% of E. coli hemolytic strains with equal incidence (50%) in the suckling and weaned pigs. K99 fimbrial adhesin was recorded in the weaned animals in only 4 serotyped strains (1%) which were also capable of producing hemolysin.
