Cardiovascular risk factors in women

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death among menopausal women. Different risk factors are responsible for the development of CHD in women ; lipids with increasing levels of LDL cholesterol and decreasing levels of HDL cholesterol, cigarette smoking, hypertension, obesity, older age, diabetes mellitus and oestrogen deficiency. Post menopausal hormonal replacements therapy (HRT) protects women against CHD, partly through its beneficial effects on lipid profile. The aim of this research was to determine the influence of HRT (oestrogens in combination with progestines) upon the lipid profile, lipoprotein Lp(a) and apolipoproteins A-I, A-II, apoB and apoE in 115 healthy postmenopausal women and 50 postmenopausal controls without HRT, during 15.23ą0.14 months of therapy. HRT group had a significantly lower levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and total/HDL cholesterol ratio and higher levels HDL cholesterol. Apo A-I and apo-II had significantly higher levels in the treated group (HRT) than controls, and lower levels of apoB. In each group, there was no change in the levels of lipoprotein Lp(a) nor apo E. The study clearly demonstrated the favorable effects of HRT on lipid profile and lipoproteins apo A-I, apo A-II and apoB. In both groups genetic risk factors like lipoprotein Lp(a) and apo E were unchanged. HRT decreases risk for coronary heart disease by influence on metabolic changes of lipid and apolipoprotein profile in menopausal women who were taking through 15 months of hormonal replacement therapy.
