Laser ablation of polymer-graphite composite
A method for increasing the surface roughness of a polymer-graphite composite material is presented. The method is based on laser ablation of the surface layer of the material. The material is exposed to intense pulses of radiation. The radiation is absorbed on the surface of the composite, causing an instantaneous increase of the surface temperature. The vapor pressure of the polymer material at elevated temperature is high enough to allow for a rapid desorption of the polymer, while the graphite grains are left intact. The result of the laser treatment of the polymer-graphite composite is therefore selective etching. The polymer is is effectively removed from the surface layer of the order of few micrometers, while the graphite grains stay on the surface. The modification of the surface roughness was determined by scanning electron microscopy and by measuring surface roughness. The results obtained by EM revealed the presence of graphite grains on the surface, while the roughness measurements allow for quantitative determination of the average surface roughness. In our case, the surface roughness Ra increased from initial value of approximately 0.15 micrometers to nearly 4 micrometers. The roughness did not change much with increasing the laser power as long as the power was above the critical value, which in our case was about 10e4 Jm-2.
