WORKING ELECTRODES IN VOLTAMMETRY: FROM MERCURY MACROELECTRODES TO SOLID MICROELECTRODES
Working or indicator electrodes in voltammetry are sensors that enable recognition and characterization of one or more different analytes simultaneously dissolved in a solution. It is fulfilled under the presumption that the conditions for the manifestation of the physico-chemical characteristics of the analytes such as the diffusion, the energy of reduction, oxidation and/or adsorption, could be applied, and the results measured, with enough resolution and sensitivity. The main principles and laws of the operation of the working electrode in the assembly with one or more other electrodes in potentiostatic or galvanostatic conditions, in different hydrodynamic conditions is recapitulated. Historical development and classification of the working electrodes, considering their material, size, geometry, construction, analytical window, sensitivity, reproducibility and applicability to different physico-chemical conditions of the analyzed solution are given. The main directions of the future development of the electrode are proposed.
