Porcine pleuropneumonia in Croatia

The first epizootics of porcine pleuropneumonia (pp) caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (ap) in large pig breeding farms in Croatia were reported in 1983. The serological diagnosis (sd) of pp was introduced at 1985 by 2-META. Inthat time majority of isolates ap strains were identified as serotype 2, and some strains isolated from farms in eastern part of Croatia were serotypes 4-7. During 1995. ELISA was introduced in sd of pp. The results achieved by 2-META and ELISA were compared, and the best agreement were achieved in younger age categories (gilts) with kappa value 0.633 for detection of antibodies against serotype 2 and 0.437 in detection against serotype 4-7. The lowest agreement of the two assays was recorded in oldest age group (sows) with kappa value of 0.128 and 0.199 for detection of antibodies against ap serotype 2 and 4-7, respectively. During second half of 1997. a severe outbreaks of pp with peracute form of the disease were detected particularly at one farm. This outbreaks occured following the imports of gilts from different european countries. From this farm 7 isolated strains of ap were serotipized by GDP test and examined for the presence of toxin genes by PCR. Six strains out of 7 were particularly virulent serotype 9. Genetic analysis revealed that they all contained the toxin genes apxICABD and apxIICA.
