Estimation of hand preshaping during human grasping by using instrumented glove

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of the instrumented glove in measuring the hand opening during the reach-to-grasp movement. Experiment included simultaneous measurement of reaching movement performed by a single healthy subject, by Optotrak motion-tracking system and the 5DT Data Glove 14 Ultra. By applying the proposed hand model which uses the hand joints angles measured by the glove as input data, the spatial positions of the joints were calculated. The measure for hand opening was calculated and compared with the results obtained for the data measured by the Optotrak. It is proposed that instrumented glove could be useful in the assessment of hand opening during the reaching tasks.
