Silent period modulation by receptors in oral mucosa after aplication of adhesive paste

Purpose: Silent period (SP) is the reflex pause or the period of suppressive activity that is subsequent to some sort of stimuli during or following muscle contraction. Despite extensive investigation the receptors involved in the mechanism of reflex activity are not completely evaluated. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether the reflex activity of the masticatory muscles in denture wearers is altered after the application of denture adhesive paste. Methods: Thirty edentulous subjects with complete removable dentures participated in this study. Electromyographic data were simultaneously recorded from the masseter and temporal muscles of both sides by surface electrodes, using a computerized recording and analysis system. In order to investigate whether there are differences in the sensitivity of the jaw reflexes, silent periods were elicited under standardized conditions, and duration of silent period (SPD) and its latency (SPL) were measured before and after application of denture adhesive paste. Results: Results revealed that SPL did not (p>0, 05) differ significantly in complete denture wearers before and after application of denture adhesive, both in masseter and in temporal muscles. After the denture adhesive application, the silent period duration significantly decreased (p<0, 05). Conclusions: The decreasing in silent period duration in complete denture wearers after denture adhesive application refers that, due to better denture retention, the time need for stimulation of oral mucosa receptors after the occlusal contact is decreased. Therefore, SPD might be useful in discrimination of the reflexibility of neuromuscular response in the oro-facial region.
