Headache following epileptic seizures
The authors investigated headache following epileptic seizures in 80 epileptic patients - 49 with generalized seizures and 31 with complex partial seizures. Post-ictal headache appears in 36 (45%) of the patients, 22 of the latter having characteristic migraine headache (photophobia, nausea, throbbing pain). Between the epileptic seizures, patients had no headache, with the exeption of five who also suffered from migraine. Results of research indicate that the post-ictal headache is benign. In addition to metabolic changes which cause disturbances in cerebral circulation, the authors favour the theory of neural discharge in the locus coeruleus and the brainstem. They can be the "trigger" for changes in the cerebral blood flow responsible not only for the migraine but also for the headache following epileptic seizure.
