Determination of Resinous Binder on Hystorical Textile
Many different substances have been used through the history as binders on paintings, sculptures, wooden or textile materials. The identification of these materials is often crucial in order to plan future conservations treatment steps and to understand deterioration processes. For this reason it is important to characterize the technologies employed by artists. The thin layer chromatography can be used to simultaneously separate many different components in a mixture, and to identify unknown materials by comparing their RF parameters to that of unknown reference materials. By applying modern instruments for automatic application of samples and automatic recording and evaluating of plates and by being simple, rapid, and relatively inexpensive, this method holds advantage over many alternative analytical techniques. The main advantage for textile conservators is the possibility to identify many different binding substances (proteins, waxes, resins or polysaccharides) which can be present on textile materials.
