Effect of chain lenght on the protection of copper by n-alkanethiols
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed by the adsorption of n-alkanethiols onto copper provides a flexible method for producing films that can protect the underlying metal against corrosion. In the present work the characterization of the self-assembled layers of 1-dodecanethiol and 1-octadecanethiol on copper were performed using ex situ measuring techniques: contact angle, scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser microscopy. They have shown the existence of adhesive, hydrophobic, nanostructured and highly-packed monolayers. The most effective techniques for the detection of structural defects in self-assembled monolayers were confocal laser microscopy and high-resolution scanning electrochemical microscopy. The chain structure of the adsorbate-substrate systems was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The protective properties of the modified and unmodified cooper samples in an aqueous acetate buffer solution were investigated with cyclic voltammetry, and in situ scanning electrochemical microscopy. It was found that the self-assembled monolayers of 1-dodecanethiol and 1-octadecanethiol excellently inhibited (>99 %) the copper corrosion in an acetate buffer, pH = 6.
