Thermal Insulation of Historic Buildings

The objective of this work is to identify possible ways of improvement of thermal insulation characteristics of partitions in historic buildings, as well as in buildings under protection. Overal thermal losses of a historic building could be significantly reduced by improvement of thermal insulation characteristics of just its specific partitions. In certain cases, by utilizing this method, it is possible to meet the required, norm-determined thermal standards, even if some partitions do not attain normative values of thermal transfer coefficients. The problem of thermal insulation – as well as that of energy saving – in cases of historic buildings, should not and cannot be solved by universal methods and proposals. Such complicated cases, namely, depend on a whole number of involved factors and elements. The only appropriate approach to solving this problem is through intense interdisciplinary activity of all the participants in the process of rehabilitation of historic buildings. In dealing with constructions registered as histor ic and cultural monuments, the imperative of maintaining their original appearance, structure and materials should have absolute priority over the demand for optimal thermal conditions and maximal energy saving. However, it is essential that the basic physical requirements should be attained: it is necessary to secure that the use of such buildings, and established new microclimatic conditions, do not lead to possible construction damages and eventual negative implications for the quality of life in such spaces.
