REGIONAL AIR POLLUTION MODELLING

The high levels of air pollutants have a strong influence both on ecosystems and human health. Air quality modelling is becoming essential to understand atmospheric processes under which the pollution from industrial complexes, road traffic and other emission sources influence the dynamics of environment. A coupled multiscale-nested air quality modelling system MM5-SMOKE-CMAQ was implemented as a useful tool to assess regional air quality issues. Mezoscale meteorological model MM5 was applied to simulate regional-scale meteorology, hence obtaining meteorological state variables (velocity vectors, pressure, humidity, temperature and other derived variables). Emission modelling system SMOKE was used to generate gridded emissions data from temporal and spatial distribution of point and area sources. Finally, the CMAQ chemical transport model was used to ensemble all pre-generated data to simulate chemical processes, transport and deposition of primary and secondary pollutants. Modelling was conducted for a period of high ozone levels during summertime of 2005 and 2006. Measured data from 10 stations in Rijeka's wider area were collected and compared against results of simulations under different modelling parameters. Different spatial and temporal model resolutions were analyzed and conclusion that high resolution is necessary for describing and capturing mesoscale phenomena over complex terrain area were derived. Finally, guidelines for regulatory based continuous air quality monitoring and modelling were discussed and efficient proposal evaluated.
