Observations of the "Green oak", the supposed hybrid between Quercus cerris and Q. ilex

The "Green oak" growing in Ravni Kotari, near Zadar, Croatia was described as a hybrid Q. x. viridis Trinajstić, hybr. nov., hybrid between Quercus cerris f. austriaca and Q. ilex. It is unlikely to find a hybridization between two species where acorns mature in the second year (Q. cerris L.) and in the first year (Q. ilex L.). Due to that presumption we had investigated this tree in more detail. The tree height was estimated as 20.2 m and the diameter in breast height as 1.6 m. Diagnostic features of that tree were described in details. According to the morphological traits of the "Green oak" and the results of a comparative volatile compounds investigation of leaves in a "Green oak", Q. cerris and Q. ilex (Borzan et al. 1997) the opinion is given that the "Green oak" could be a progeny of a back-crossed hybrid between Q. cerris and Q. suber.
