Experimental Simulation of the Oncoming Air Flow on Bridges
The simulation of atmospheric boundary layer using the Counihan method is discussed in order to reproduce the characteristics of oncoming air flow on bridges for open field type of terrain. The wind tunnel values of the most relevant parameters (mean velocity, turbulence intensity, Reynolds shear stress and integral length scale of turbulence) are discussed and compared with the atmospheric data and with the theoretical models. The satisfactory agreement is obtained between the simulated and the atmospheric boundary layer. Mean velocities agree very well with the power law distribution, while the vertical turbulence intensities are slightly greater than in the atmosphere. The agreement of Reynolds shear stress is very well, whereas the integral length scales of turbulence can be modelled only moderately as a result of the scale effects.
