Ferruginous Duck at Draganić fishponds, NW Croatia, and a population estimate for Croatia
Between August 1991 and January 1995 at the Draganići fish-ponds (NW Croatia) the Ferruginous Duck was a regular breeding species, with 60-100 pairs (Kralj et al 1997). Previously, its population in Croatia has been underestimated and numbers are thought to be stable or even increasing. The breeding population was estimated using data gathered on Carp ponds. Although the Ferruginous Duck also breeds in natural wetland habitats, it seems that the biggest part of the Croatia breeding population us dependent on fish-pond habitats. This is another example of the ornithological importance and nature conservation value of these man-made biotopes in Croatia.
