Morphology, Mechanical and Tribological Properties of PP+PS Blends
Effects of a styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) block copolymer compatibilizer on properties of the title blends was investigated. PP + PS blends with varying concentrations were prepared and to some of them 7 % wt. SEBS was added. Processing behavior was followed by measuring torque in a Haake Record 90 twin extruder. The tensile strength, elongation at break and impact strength of uncompatibilized and compatibilized blends were compared and connected to the morphology determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Scratch resistance was measured in a Swiss Micro Scratch tester for several loads from 5 to 15 N. Sliding wear was determined by multiple scratching along the same groove [1, 2] ; 15 scratches were performed for each applied constant load of 5, 10, 15 and 20 N. PP is known to exist in two major crystallographic forms ; the morphology and properties of PP can be significantly affected by additives [3]. We find an improvement in several properties of the blends caused by the SEBS as compatibilizer. SEM results show that an improvement ia due to a more uniform morphology in compatibilized blends, reduced sizes of particles of the dispersed phase and increased interfacial adhesion between the main component phases.
