Controlled crystallization of calcite in semicontinuous process

Calcium carbonate is an extremely versatile filler and pigment that is utilized in a wide variety of products including paper, plastics, rubber and pharmaceuticals. Its final application is determined by different physical and chemical properties. Calcium carbonate crystallizes in different hydrate modifications and forms three polymorphs: calcite, aragonite and vaterite. Because of its thermodynamic stability at standard conditions and its possibility to appear in various morphologies (rhombohedral, scalenohedral, spheroidal etc.), calcite proves to be the most important polymorph in industrial application. Crystallization of calcite were preformed in a banch-scale reactor (V = 6.0 dm3) during semicontinuous carbonation of Ca(OH)2 suspension. Calcite crystals, having different physical properties, were produced by varying a range of process parameters, like temperature, supersaturation, CO2 flow rate, stirring rate and mass concentration of Ca(OH)2 suspension. Samples were characterized by means of FT-IR spectroscopy, TEM and BET analysis. In order to identify the effects of the chosen process parameters on the calcite morphology and related specific surface area, as well as on the extent of CO2 conversion, an empirical approach based on the experimental design techniques was employed.
