Catalytic activity of Novel Guanidine Derivatives Possessing Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonds
Use of guanidines as catalysts in organic reactions is well known [1]. It was shown that their catalytic activity depend on their basicity [2]. We are especially interested in influence of formation of intramolecular hydrogen bond (IMHB) within the protonated guanidine derivative in order to increase basicity of the parent molecule [3]. Certain diamines and similar molecules form strong IMHB in gas phase [4], however, it is still questionable whether such effect will increase activity of the guanidine derivatives in homogeneous catalysis in organic solvent. Compounds 1 - 4 were prepared according known literature procedures and tested in several technologicaly interesting reactions: transesterification of rapeseed oil with methanol, Knoevenagel condensation and Henry reaction. Their activity was compared with the commercially available guanidine catalysts like 1, 5, 7-triazabicyclodec-1-ene (TBD) and 7-methyl-1, 5, 7-triazabicyclodec-1-ene (MTBD).
