Health Condition of the Sweet Chestnut in Croatia and the Protection Measures in Practice
The sweet chestnut is a natural sort of tree in Croatia. It comes in mixed and pure stands on the region of continental and sub-Mediterranen climate. The total surface of sweet chestnut in Croatia measures in approximately 35.000 ha (according to the information from 1995). The chestnut blight caused by fungi Cryphonectria parasitica is present over the whole dispersion area of the shestnut. The intensity of infection varies from moderate - to strong. In the chestnut colonies, a superficial necrosis is also present the occurrence of hypovirulent strains of fungi enables spontaneous sweet chestnuts recovery. The protection measures refer primarily to the conduction of cultivation activities of nourishment, removing the dry trunks and the trunks infected by virulent strain of fungi Cryphonectria parasitica. On the places od strong infection, some mixture of hypovirulent strains collected on the wider region of Croatia has been intraduced experimentally. Some experimental sheets are put and new solutions for the preotection of the sweet chestsnut are explored.
