The effect of hyperbaric oxygenation and vitamin C on motor activity after experimental spinal cord injury in rabbits
Spinal cord trauma followed by nrve tissue damage, is an important medical and social problem and there is no effective drug terapy of spinal cord traumatized person. Ischemia and hypoxia, as a result of spinal cord injury, lead to the nerve tissue damage and deterioration of neural functions, and there are lot of free radical formations due to hypoxia. Hyperbaric oxygenation is a potent reducer of tissue hypoxia, and vitamin C is a free radical scavenger. It was of a great interest to test if hyperbaric oxygenation and vitamin C could protect motor activity in spinal cord contusioned animals. Vitamin C and hyperbaric oxygenation showed no influence on motor activity in rabbits with non injured spinal cord. Opposite to that, the achieved results have indicated that the hyperbaric oxygenation approve motor activity in the traumatized animals. Vitamin C has shown a slight improvement of motor activity in the traumatized animals, but without statistical significance.
