Wave loads on oil tankers in the Adriatic Sea
The paper presents methodology for calculation of vertical wave bending moments on oil tankers in the Adriatic Sea. Since the numerical hydrodynamic methods are rather time consuming, recently developed and validated semi-analytical approach for calculation of transfer functions is adopted. Short- and long-term predictions of extreme vertical wave bending moments are performed using T-spectrum and wave data collected by Tabain [2] and Leder [3]. The results are finally compared to the IACS rule vertical wave bending moments for oil tankers of different size. It was shown in the paper that for smaller tankers hull-girder wave bending moments may be surprisingly high. This study is motivated by expected large increase in oil transport along the Adriatic Sea in the following years. No matter how low is the probability of tanker accident due to heavy weather, it is unavoidably increasing with the number of ships involved in transport. Therefore, it is extremely important to calculate probability of ship structural failure while passing through the Adriatic Sea. The presented results of hull-girder wave loads is fundamental part of such a structural reliability study, which is presently in progress.
