Recent Foraminifera from the Croatian Adriatic seacoast
The sites were chosen to show the reltionship between enclosed circulation patterns, karstic drinage (subsurfce and surface), and anthropogenic influence. We studied from northwestern to southeast: the Mirna river estuary, Plomin Bay, Rijeka Bay, and Mljetlakes. It is clear that constant fresh water input is a stressful influence, but neither intesive agricultural or industrial activities in the vicinity nor intesive marine traffic have left a noticeble impact on the forminiferl morphologies. Foraminiferal assemblages from estricted marine settings are characterized by a low biodiversity index, depth dependence of "specialist" miliolids over rotaliids, and in temporarily hypoxic lagoons, the presence of species tolerant of low oxygen conditions (in "dead" assemblages).
