Gender Imbalance in the Croatian Mass Media

The unequal position of women in the media is visible regardless whether we focus on the frequencies of appearance in the media, the qualitative representation of women in media contents, or the number of women included in the production and presentation of media content. This is, again, confirmed by a short glance at the quantitative data that will be presented here, that shows the frequencies of female/male appearance in the media. The presentation includes the results of a comparative analysis of gender access to the mass media (television programs and daily newspapers) in Croatia, in which “ access” is defined as direct quotation of women/men in newspaper articles, and in television news bulletins. The variables that will be taken into consideration are: the subject covered, the time/space given to females/males, the range of participants (representing a specific social group or institution), and the role of the participants in the news item. The data set used was created in a comparative research on content diversity carried out for the Council of Europe, in which a quantitative content analysis was conducted in the period of two weeks (24.10.2005 – 06.11.2005), through the monitoring of daily newspapers and television news coverage. Even though the data set is based only on quantitative analysis, it will enable us to estimate whether there are some differences between the compared broadcasters/newspapers that operates on a national level. On a broad scale, it will give an insight into female/male access to the analyzed media, which forms an important part of the public sphere in Croatia.
