Fuzziness in Dutch prepositional categories
This paper experimentally investigates the issue whether spatial prepositions, and in particular the Dutch prepositions in and op are fuzzy categories. The results show that in and op are no fuzzy categories: they are quite sharply bounded and the selectional parameters have discrete values. The fact that the prepositions in and op can often both be used in a number of usage contexts (with different patterns of preference) is not indicative of fuzziness, but it is the result of, on the one hand, the compatibility between the relevant referential aspect and the semantic information stored in the prepositions and, on the other hand, the way in which contextual and real-world information sets the selectional parameters and thus determines the salience pattern for the prepositions.
