Individual differences in tactics of manipulation: A family study

The purpose of this study was to explore the etiology of individual differences in tactics of manipulation, associating tactics of manipulations used by different family members and associating tactics of manipulation and personality traits. The sample used in the study consisted of second-to-four year pupils of high-schools in Zagreb and their parents. The sample consisted of 193 pupils (60 male, 133 female) and 340 parents (152 male, 188 female). All participants filled the questionnaire assessing tactics of manipulation constructed for this study and NEO-FFI personality inventory. Each measure was administered twice, once in self-report format and once in peer-report format. Two measures of parent-child similarity in tactics of manipulation were calculated: correlations between parent and child score, and regression of child score on midparent score. The results show that there is a familiar similarity in tactics of manipulation. Obtained familiality estimates indicate that between 20% and 40% of individual differences in tactics of manipulation could be explained by genetic differences. To test the relationship between personality traits and tactics of manipulation correlation coefficients between personality traits and tactics of manipulation were calculated and predictivity of personality traits for the use of tactics of manipulation was tested in regression analysis. Meaningful relations between personality traits and tactics of manipulation were obtained, but obtained correlation coefficients were low as well as predictivity of personality traits for the use of tactics of manipulation.
