Interactions of gillnet fishery with loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta in the northern Adriatic Sea

We analyzed bycatch of loggerhead turtles in northern Adriatic Sea (Slovenia and Croatia) based upon (i) interviews with professional gillnet fishermen in selected ports and (ii) data on incidental capture of individual turtles in gillnets in 2000-2005. The mean notch-tip Curved Carapace Length (CCL) of loggerheads captured by gillnetting was 40.2 cm (SD: 11.9, N = 84), with predominant proportion (63.1%) of small neritic juveniles (CCL = 30-50 cm), and direct mortality rate of 74.7% (N = 83). We calculated Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) as (1) the number of turtle captures/vessel/year (mean: 2.81, SD: 3.14, range: 0-11), (2) captures/fishing day (0.16, SD: 0.18, range: 0-0.67), and (3) the number of captures /km of gillnet (mean: 1.11, SD: 1.64, range: 0-7.50). When grouped together, CPUEs of trammel nets (3-layers) : 1-layer gillnets were 3-4 folds higher (0.14 : 0.05 turtle captures/fishing day, and 1.34 : 0.33 captures/km, respectively) ; however these values not differ statistically (p = 0.08 and p = 0.07, respectively). The gillnet bycatch was associated with the warm period of year, between May and October (Chi-sq.= 4.33, p = 0.03, d.f. = 1). From 234 vessels registered for gillnetting in the study region, we conservatively estimated gillnet bycatch of 658 captures/year. If multifunctional vessels are also considered (N = 1203), the bycatch may be as high as 4038 captures/year, suggesting a significant conservation concern for loggerheads in northern Adriatic.
