N-salicylideneamino Acidato Complexes of Oxovanadium(IV). Molecular and Crystal Structure of [VO(SAL-L-GLN)(ETOH)2]
Vanadium complexes of N-salicylideneamino acids and derivatives attract interest as model systems for pyridoxal-potentiated enzymes [1]. Also, oxovanadium(IV/V) is one of the most active metal ions in  -eliminations and several of its N-salicylidene- and N-naphthalideneamino acidato complexes have been investigated [2]. Our work on oxovanadium(IV) complexes of Schiff bases derived from the reaction of salicylaldehyde and L-amino acids (L-asparagine, L-glutamine and L-ornithine hydrochloride) resulted in isolation and identification of several different complex species. Mononuclear oxovanadium(IV) complex, [VOL(EtOH)2] was prepared by the reaction of VOSO4• 5H2O with N-salicylidene-L-glutamate in ethanol while [V9V(IV)O28]7- and coumarin-3-carboxamide were isolated in reaction with N-salicylidene-L-asparaginate. All products were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
