Advantages of cytologic analysis in the diagnosis of neuroblastoma in children

Neuroblastoma is the most frequent solid tumor occuring in children, comprising 7-10% all children's tumors. in this work we evaluated the diagnostic contribution of cytological possibilities in the diagnosis of neuroblastoma in children, during 10-year period. Using FNA biopsy, exfoliative or in - print method( of deep pediatric lesion, ascites, pleural drain or intraoiperative material) we diagnosed neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroblastoma or ganglioneuroma in 40 children in the Children's Hospital Zagreb. The results obtained were compared to the results of histopathologic diagnosis, immunocytochemistry analysis and scintiscans. In more than 50% of children with neuroblastoma in this study we detected metastases ba one of the cytologic method. Correlation of the results obtained with PHD was markedly high, correlation with immunocytochemistry results was very good, and immunocytochemistry also had an important role especially in differential diagnosis of small round cell malignancies of chilhood. Correlation in ratio to scitiscans was also satisfactory. In conclusion, FNA biopsy, exfoliative and in-print methodcytological analyses can be accurat, inexpensive and rapid diagnostic procedure. Sometimes cytological analyses are the only possible diagnostic methods for diagnosing malignant disease in children, and thus neuroblastoma. Our results obtained justify the use of cytologic methods, which could be used more frequently when diagnosing neuroblastoma in children.
