The NDH’ s relations with Italy and Germany

The establishment of the NDH was closely related to the activities of Italy and Germany in 1941. The German desire to establish a stabile regime in Croatia led by the HSS failed due to Maček’ s refusal to cooperate with them. Only then they agreed to support the Ustashas and to accept the Italian protégé Dr. Ante Pavelić as the leader of an independent Croatia. Although the German role in the establishment of the new regime was of a major importance, the fact is that in 1941, Italian influence in the country had a greater influx on the course of events. The Rome treaties and the fact that Italian armed forces controlled almost half of its territory had a negative impact on the situation in the NDH. Italian control had a devastating impact on the economy. Italian domination prevented the NDH authorities from protecting Croatian interests, so their efforts were limited to impotent protests and memorandums. The German presence in the NDH was not so evident in 1941, but it was nevertheless of the same importance for the internal political and economic development of the country. German influence and pressure encouraged the Ustasha regime to copy National Socialist patterns. So, from the beginning, the character of the NDH was defined by its subjugation to the power of Germany and Italy. As indicated at the beginning of this article, its limited space allowed me to present only basic data about some aspects of the history of the NDH.
