Revealing the Identity of Built Places - Planning Practice from Croatia
Looking at settlements can give a special pleasure. Like a piece of architecture, every Settlement is a construction of Place within a Space, but one of vast scale, … On different occasions and for different people sequences of the Place are reflected and mirrored over the screen of history and tradition in different ways. But there is something that remains, that is always there - a genius locus: a spirit that carries a touch, a recall of a single place. Why forgetting or neglecting it? Planners, standing in front of the Millennium gates, should be able to read those recalls and implant traditional way of looking at the environment them into the planning process in order to (re)produce more human places The existing planning process and misunderstanding the importance of identity of and with place, undoubtedly lead to rootlessness. Preparing development and physical plans for several medieval towns in Istria the authorS of this paper performed a search for those tiny Elements of Tradition that create the identity of these places, trying to restore them through the planning process and still allow so needed progress entering the new Millennium. As classical inventorying was not enough and sufficient, it was necessary to develop a new approach and methodology in revealing the values of their appearance.
