Contact simulation during nail penetrating into a concrete block
In the present report a current status of the research project: "3D numerical simulation of the penetration of a nail into a concrete block" is given. Contact algorithm is employed to determine the degree of nail penetration into concrete. It is important that the algorithm is robust since it cannot be predicted what shape will concrete block take during crushing in front of nail. Large displacement and strain formulation is needed in order to realistically model behavior of concrete on the front of the nail were displacements and strains are large. Dynamic analysis is needed in order to account for the transformation of nail's kinetic energy into strain energy of concrete block (that then causes damage and crushing of concrete) as well as to take into account the influence of inertia forces on the concrete response.
