Conceptual change requires insight and intervention

Most of students' alternative conceptions in physics originate from students' implementation of simplified reasoning schemes, but some seem to be additionally reinforced by students' experience. The combination of reasoning and experience makes some ideas stand out as firm alternative conceptions. When attempting to induce conceptual change in students, the teacher has to challenge both the reasonong and experience aspects of firm alternative conceptions.
