Contribution to the Knowledge about Speleological Features of the Dugi otok Island

The paper deals with the Strašna Peć Cave (Horrible Cave) situated on the SW side of the Dugi otok island, as one of 57 already known speleological objects on the island. The cave is developed in Cretaceous limestone as the main part of the island, and presents the biggest speleological feature in Zadar’ s Archipelago. The very first description was given anonymously in 1898, probably by Pietro Rolli, at the time the owner of the surrounding land and the cave. It actuated a well known Croatian naturalist Luka Jelić to make the first precise investigation of the Strašna peć (Horrible Cave), but, unfortunately, without any saved sketches. The first plan was given in 1930 and corrected later in 1953 and finally in March 2000. During the last exploration, the authors visited a few other locations and made an inventory of already known speleological objects on the Dugi otok Island. Stories about visits of famous persons to this cave, such as the English Royal Family (heir apparent Edward and Miss Simpson) and Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph I., are yet to be closely investigated.
